The Top Five Questions That
People Ask About AD(H)D!

1. What does AD(H)D stand for?

ADD stands for Attention Deficit Disorder
and ADHD stand for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity
Disorder.

2. What exactly is AD(H)D?

ADD and ADHD are genetically handed down
disorders. The basic explanitation is this,
the frontal lobe of our brain is not activated.
The frontal lobe of the brain regulates the rest of
the brain and thus, it has an effect on our
entire system. When the frontal lobe of your
brain isn't functioning it creates what is called
ADD or ADHD. Also, when this happens it causes
the rest of our brain to scan at a largely accelerated
rate, known as the scanning brain. With the scanning
brain those that have ADD get very frustrated
because their bodies cannot keep up with the
accelerated rate that their brain is working
(scanning), it causes the body basically, in a sense,
to give up, thus causing depression in a lot of people
with ADD. It can also cause extreem rage and feelings
of being aggitated all the time. It may also cause
problems with sleep, as well as problems with being
overweight. With ADHD, the body tries to keep up
with the scanning brain thus causing the hyperactivity.
This may also cause weight problems, but in the
reverse, not able to gain weight. Those with
ADHD may also experience some rage problems but
not as bad as those who have ADD. People with ADD
& ADHD also have a hard time focusing and concen-
traiting, as they are in tune with EVERYTHING
that goes on around them from the teacher talking,
to someone tapping a pencil, to someone shuffling
papers etc...

3. What are some of the things
to look out for if I think that
I or my children have AD(H)D?

Some of the symptoms are inattentiveness,
hyperactivity, daydreaming, inability to focus on
things, unable to stay on a paticular task without
being reminded over and over and over again what
they are suppose to be doing, inability to control temper
or actions, being overweight, being underweight,
sleep problems, and problems with school and school
work.(Note: Not just one of these problems by it's self is
cause to worry but several of these problems tied in
together, is when you may need to start thinking about
if you, or your child may have it.)

4. How do I go about getting
help for myself or my child if
I think one of us has AD(H)D?

The best way is if you have any friends who has, or
whom their children have AD(H)D, ask who they
go to and what they think of them. If you don't know of
anyone with this condition, talk with a Dr. that you are
familar with and find out whom he or she may know
and/or reccomend that treats this condition.
(NOTE: It is harder to find a Dr. that will treat an
adult than it is to find a Dr. who will treat a child.)

5. What types of medication are used
in treating ADHD?

There are several types of medications to treat this
condition such as
Ritalin,Cylert, Adderall,
Zoloft, Dexedrine, Nortriptyline, Clonidine, Metadate,
Depakote, and now also Concerta. As a second medi-
cation to go along with one of the above, Dr's may also
prescribe on of the following:
Zoloft, Tenex, Welbutrin,
Prozac, or Paxil.
(Note: Sometimes they use
Welbutrin by its self to
treat AD(H)D but none of the others in the second
medication list that I know of.)

Disclaimer: I am just a mother of children with AD(H)D
and someone who has ADD as well. I AM NOT nor do I claim to
be a medical professional. What you read on this page is my
opinion, and mine alone! I have done hundreds of hours of research
and the above is the conclusions that I have reached.

My ADD Poem!

My mind is racing !
Spinning all around!
But when I look
Nothing can be found!

I can't seem to function!
My body goes too slow!
I feel at the end of my junction!
I feel the need to Go! Go! Go!

Why am I like this?
I thought I'd never know!
I knew my life was amiss
With all this need to go!

One day while I was searching,
And my mind scanning so,
I stumbled upon a teaching,
That to the Dr. I must go!

The Dr. said, "Oops, you need Ritalin,
To stop that scanning brain!
So now I'm able to do cuddlin'!
And it also helps me to stay sane!
